WHY DID I CREATE A DENTAL DOULA SERVICE

This goes back to a lifetime of unfortunate traumatic dental experiences for me, starting at a very young age, and a desire to turn this awful trend into a triumph of self empowerment by working with my fears rather than being consumed by them.

Looking at my fears has been one of my most transformative achievements these past two decades. In my book ‘Innerworld Guardianship’ I talk about how getting to know our Innerworld, i.e. our True Self and cleaning up all that is holding us back, opens us up to our unique power to create the life we desire. 

I guess for me it was time to clean up the negative narrative I had around anything dental related. The toolkit I had developed and integrated in me over the years, was designed to thrive through life’s challenges, now sprang into place and supported me from beginning to end.

So looking back, I am incredibly inspired by my own work, and wish for everyone to be able to have a similar experience if they so desire. Knowing that an empowering experience is available to all of us when we are curious, courageous and open to change, I felt driven to create a Support System. Creating an opportunity for others to experience this wonderfully powerful feeling of being in control rather than being a victim to our circumstances, and I am eager to offer my support to anyone ready to take charge of their own destiny.

W H Y  USE A DENTAL DOULA

The answer to this question is again very personal, but during my own recent extensive dental reconstruction and oral surgery in Costa Rica,  I found it really comforting to have someone available to me for emotional and practical support. 

At that time I was so fortunate to have a dear friend who lives in CR and who was willing to join me in San Jose to help me navigate the foreign nature of the country as well as the at-the- time new to me world of Dentistry, offering emotional support when I needed it.  Inspired by how incredibly helpful her presence was to me at the time, I created the concept of a Dental Doula, to empower others on the same path. So as a Dental Doula and experienced-based, non-medical companion, I support another individual through a significant health-related experience such as dental reconstruction and/or oral surgery in a foreign country, and provide practical, emotional and stress reducing care to create an empowering experience for my client.  

I adopted a Holistic approach based on the perspective that everything is connected and that to heal one aspect of ourselves, Mind - Body and Spirit all need to be addressed. In that light I find it essential to offer various coaching modalities for my Clients to choose from. To assist them with their own empowerment Before, During and After the experience by providing them comfort and emotional healing through stress relief practices.

As a Dental Doula I do not not offer any Medical or Dental care, however I am experienced and knowledgeable about the many aspects of Dental Travel and the possible Emotional, Physical and Practical challenges that may occur.  

W H Y  TRAVEL FOR DENTAL PROCEDURES

With the cost of Dental Care in the USA being so high, it has become a logical step to consider traveling abroad for those who are in need of minor or extensive Dental Care. In Costa Rica the quality of Dentistry and Customer Service makes you feel like a V.I.P.  while at the same time in comparison with the cost of Dental Procedures done in the US, savings of up to 75 % are common. 

Personally I chose Costa Rica because I was already familiar with this delicious country and its friendly local population. In 2013,  beautiful secluded Drake Bay on the Pacific coast became my home for a year, completely and totally capturing me with everything life in Costa Rica has to offer. Every winter since then I have returned for a taste of Pura Vida for 2 or 3 months. Following my own tradition, right now I am writing this from lovely Playa Chiquita, Limon on the Caribbean side, where I am enjoying the pleasures of a peaceful recuperation from my recent Dental procedures as I swing in my hammock on the beach.

This has inspired me so much that I decided I wanted to bring this information and support system to everyone who is ready to embrace their own health and take empowered action.

Good question, well for starters it looks like I am the only one right now that is offering this Dental Doula service (haha). But more importantly, if someone is reaching out for support, information and guidance, I find that any insight coming from personal experience is so rich. I really felt deeply empowered by my own work around this very challenging life experience with my precious teeth, and I realized it was so positive because it was based on decades of Self Reflection, Inner Work and my personal understanding dealing with trauma triggers and my own way of finding tools to cope with and to heal these areas in myself. 

My book is written specifically to support anyone curious in finding the Path leading inside to recover their Inner Strength and reconnect with their true powerful self. All of my coaching and supporting work is based on my own findings on that subject. When I see how incredibly helpful that toolkit has been for me and for those whom I have coached, especially during extreme stressful situations,  like sitting in the dental chair, I cannot help but feel compelled to pay it forward and share the golden nuggets that I discovered during my own struggles in life.
